August is Dental Month at Torenbeek Vet Clinic! 

Dental disease is one of the most common health problems we see in pets. Unfortunately, it can be easy to miss, as dogs and cats are very good at hiding signs of pain and discomfort.

What is dental disease?

Dental disease begins when plaque and bacteria build up on the teeth. Over time, plaque can harden into tartar, leading to inflammation and infection of the gums and the tissues supporting the teeth.

If left untreated, dental disease can become painful and may result in damaged or loose teeth, infections and tooth loss.

Signs to look out for include:

•  Bad breath
• Yellow or brown tartar
• Red or bleeding gums
• Difficulty chewing or dropping food
• Excessive drooling
• Pawing at the mouth
• Changes in eating habits

However, your pet can have dental disease without showing obvious signs, which is why regular dental checks are so important.

What does a dental clean involve?

A professional Dental Scale & Polish allows our veterinary team to thoroughly assess your pet’s mouth and remove plaque and tartar, including around the gumline. Teeth can then be polished to help create a smoother surface and reduce future plaque build-up.

If necessary, dental X-rays and extractions may also be recommended depending on your pet’s individual dental health.

What can you do at home?

Regular tooth brushing is one of the best ways to help prevent plaque build-up. Dental diets, treats and other veterinary-approved dental products can also form part of your pet’s dental care routine.

Most importantly, regular dental checks can help identify problems before they become more serious.
